So this is the commercial for the new corolla. To me this shows that Toyota knows its been phoning it in for the last 10-15 years. I mean they show how hip and cool the corolla was and then totally skip that last gen or two.

Who knows, maybe this will be the turning point where Toyota will get back to making interesting cars. They have one so far with the 86, and there are rumors for a new supra or other sports car.

Thoughts?

More like phoning it in for 30 years. The commercial itself says to me "Corolla: OLD AS BALLS!"

I like to think of how little the car has changed in all that time.

I'm pretty sure we've already proven that new Corolla is as beige as the old one. Toyota isn't going to un-beige its best selling models. That's how they became best selling models. The sports cars they're planning, however, could and should be brilliant.

Akio Toyoda is a secret enthusiast who is being forced to drag a giant lump of ugly metal behind him or the shareholders will beat him up.

I thought it was funny when they said "all new Corolla" And I'm not sure what demographic they were going after with this ad. People from the 80s and 90s? Or to younger generation who thinks that those time periods were cool. (not to say they weren't because I don't know)

They're trying to justify buying a new Corolla to 20-30 year olds who think "90s shitbox my parents had" when they hear Corolla. So they chose the cars that they were forced to drive as kids and tried to endear the buyers to them saying "you've matured and we were with you back then, so buy this so we can be with you now!"

I actually have some insight to that thought. Because Toyota's have, quite literally, taken me everywhere I went throughout my childhood. I'm now sixteen and not once have I thought I want another Corolla.

I like that you're insinuating that people thought the Corolla was a cool car before, because I don't think that's ever been the case for any generation. And I think Toyota understands that.

Only us nerds can really appreciate the AE86 Corolla.

It's selling to familiarity and safety, which is usually a sign that the product is shit, or they'd be making a hard sell with facts about it. In other words, their minimizing the amount of people who wouldn't consider a Corolla instead of maximizing the amount who would. This also makes sense since there are far more who wouldn't consider it than there are who would, so it's an easier, more specialized market to target with the ad.

All in all, it's quite clever and well done as an ad. But the product is terrible.

Seriously. Learn from pre-VAG Porsche. Sell beige cars to fund sports cars.

Did I hear turbo at 0:34? Wtf?

The only part where the corolla fit with any of those crowds MIGHT be the '60's group...

The grunge rock bit was a horrible misfit...
